Answer 2) 12 is the correct answer.

Ken purchased 48 pieces of cancy at the store.  You first needed to calculate how many pieces of his candy he gave to his girfriend since he gave her half.  You could have calculated this one of two ways.

  • (48)(.5) = 24 Pieces

  • 48/2 = 24 Pieces

Next, Ken gave his brother one fourth of the candy he purchased.  You now had to calculate how many pieces he gave to him.  The simplest way to do this would have been to divide.

  • Rember that one fourth is 1/4

  • Divide 48 by 4 which looks like 48/4 = 12 Pieces

We now know that Ken gave away 36 total pieces of candy.

  • 24 + 12 = 36

Ken's remaining pieces of candy after buying 48 and giving away 36 is 12.  Calculated this way:

  • 48 - (24 + 12) = 12 pieces

  • The answer is B
